The Carbon Commons Workgroup

The carbon commons now has it's own website with the carbon reduction learning cycle as the structure.

www.thecarboncommons.org

A community of practice for accelerated learning on carbon reduction.

This includes evaluating our organizational foot prints, setting targets for reduction and working together to share and discover ways to move toward those targets. Some members, like Nike, have gone a ways down parts of this path, others are just beginning. Some approaches are only likely to work for single company; other will apply across sectors.

We look across value chains, and look at 3 key areas that most every company can relate to:  facilities, fleets, green energy purchasing; then identify potential “buckets” of carbon reduction, identify tools and approaches to use to manage aspects of this. This working group focuses on collaboration, info sharing, information on successes and failures, and a robust dialogue on an entire systems approach.

In addition, we have an opportunity to reach out to employees and our communities in this effort, to leverage the commitment of our organizations in encouraging employees to take steps at home to measure and reduce their domestic carbon load, and then with a corps of experienced volunteers, even help steer and foster community efforts at reduction, with the organization playing a powerful catalyst role.
